This version adds tow missing settings for custom post types and taxonomies (show in admin bar for custom post type, and sort option for custom taxonomy). Other than this, few bugs are fixed and many things changed with JavaScript code. JavaScript now needs jQuery 1.7.1 to work, and it will be compatible with upcoming WP 3.6 that uses jQuery 1.9. External libraries are updated.

There are many things fixed in this version, and it is highly recommended to update this this one. There are several custom fields related problems fixed, including issues with unit and rewrite fields. Also, rewrite field had two options for activation, and one of them is now removed since it was causing confusion about how to activate. Shortcodes and custom fields value functions got few important fixes too. Interface and admin side got several fixes for tooltips, wrong strings used and many notices and warnings are also taken care of. Quick adding of post types, editor for post types have few more bugs fixed too.

First of all, plugin now requires WordPress 3.2 or newer, and it will not work with older version. This means that PHP 5.2.6 (or newer) is also required. All old and obsolete features are removed from this version. Plugin is compatible with WordPress 3.5. But, there is one thing that wasn’t updated: use of new WP 3.5 media manager. Until some examples are released on how media manager can be used with plugins, GD CPT Tools Pro still uses Thickbox to select images for custom fields.

Improved Editor

Custom post types and taxonomies panel are improved to allow use of drag’n'drop to rearrange the order of post types and taxonomies. New Add Quick options is added to allow for faster creation of post types and taxonomies with less options to worry about. New features include option to duplicate existing post types and taxonomies. Third party post types now can use advanced rewriter features, but there is not guarantee on our part that this will always work since there are things to consider beyond the control of this plugin.

But, majority of work is done on improving custom fields and meta boxes. Plugin now has 25 custom fields types build in (image on the left). If you don’t see all of them on new installations, check out the plugin settings panel to enable them. Content Types fields are added through an internal module. In the future, new fields will be added through modulas.

Custom fields system is now modular, and it allows expanding list of available fields. Some fields support use of repeaters so you can add more than one value for a field. Plugin now also support use of metabox groups, and each group can hold one or more meta boxes. They will be displayed using tabs on the editor page.

GD CPT Tools Pro 4.0 will get even better with new features planned for next releases, and with upcoming modules. Right now, there are 3 modules planned: Fields (to add extra custom fields), Posts To Posts (relationship between posts) and Newsletter (implement simple and easy to use newsletter system).

Try new version, and report any problems you might encounter, and it will be fixed as soon as possible. If you have suggestions on improving some of the fields, let me know. Few new tutorials are planned for the next few days to help with metaboxes and custom fields.

This version fixes 7 bugs, either reported or found during development of GD CPT Tools Pro 4.0. This includes: problems with layout on meta boxes panel, adding and editing meta boxes generates some JavaScript errors, few issues with additional date templates and problem with TinyMCE integration with some taxonomy names.

Main Module Settings

Index is a plugin that adds new taxonomy through GD CPT Tools Pro plugin, and this taxonomy has no UI (no meta box or panel with terms). But, in the background this taxonomy is used to index posts belonging to post types you want to use index. Once the module is activated, each post type will get Index option on the new modules tab. Also, each post type with Index module active has new option to reindex posts and initially set terms using background cron job. Each post will get a term based on the first letter (or number) in the post title. You can set module to skip some characters in the start of the title, and module supports Unicode. And you can control how to handle numbers (under one term or with individual terms), how to create terms (what slugs to use). With each post type settings you can override list of characters to skip from the title beginning.

Since the taxonomy is registered through GD CPT Tools Pro, and module is hooked into many different areas from the plugin, you can modify taxonomy to fit your needs: you can change everything about it, including adding special features, change rewrite slugs and more. To display index with terms, you can use function (in documentation for the module), or widget called Indexer. Process of indexing is done in the background (for initial indexing), or each time published post is saved for post types that you enabled Index. xScape powered themes already have a template for this new type of archive.

Module is in use on Dev4Press (in Documentation right now), and that will be expanded further soon.

Creating new post type or taxonomy is enhanced with limiter applied automatically to name for the object allowing only supported characters. Both are expanded to support new labels added in WP 3.4, so if you need, update your existing post types and taxonomies with that missing label. Many things are improved in JavaScript code.

As for the bugs, few of them are fixed: widget with invalid taxonomy selected, duplicated calls in some filtering functions, taxonomy name not editable with no terms in database and problem with generating function for post type and taxonomy for display.

Module Index, will be released on Monday (first version will be 0.9 Beta). Over the weekend module will be added to Dev4Press website, so you can see it in action in some areas (more on that when released). Dev4Press Updater will be updated also, to get support for modules. Support forums will get new set of forums for modules support.

Menu Archives Metabox

WordPress Navigation Menus are expanded with new meta box for adding post types archives links into the menus. It is simple to use, selected post types from list and add them to the menu. You can modify each menu item later. Only public post types that have archives will be in the list.

With first module coming out soon (in October), plugin is expanded with hooks to allow modules to modify and add features, support own controls. Post types and taxonomies editors support new modules panel for additional options modules might need to add. In the same time, several bugs with interface are fixed. Saving post type and taxonomies has additional validation to check and cleanup values entered for query variable and custom slugs.

Custom fields got several major improvements. Text field now can use regular expressions or masks for data entering, with several predefined regexes and masks. Each custom field has settings for limiting access to custom field values editing to specified user roles or users with specified capabilities. Same thing is done for whole meta boxes. Also, filters are added to control access from code.

Plugin also includes latest jQueryUI 1.8.23 and new gdr2 library 2.7.9.

Due to the number of major changes, please test this version and let me know if there are any issues. I will get to fixing them as soon as possible (as always).

New Prices Grid

Starting today, we have 3 new licenses to choose from and new prices for previously available licenses for GD Custom Posts and Taxonomies Tools Pro, Dev4Press Plugins Pack and all the other plugins and themes from Dev4Press.

Standard and Developer licenses remain with same set of features included, but with lower price than before. Personal license is a new one, and it can be with annual recurring payments or lifetime. Modules Page

As you can see in the main menu on top, we have new page: Modules. Right now, it shows only preview page with 2 upcoming modules: Index and Posts To Posts (might be renamed).

Index module will be 29.00 USD, but it will be free to anyone with Developer or Enterprise license. Posts To Posts will cost 49.00 USD, but it will be free to anyone with Enterprise license. Modules will require GD Custom Posts and Taxonomies Tools Pro (or Dev4Press Plugins Pack) license, and they will remain valid (for support and download) for as long as the plugin license is valid.

Index module is already in works, and it will be released after GD CPT Tools 4.0 Pro gets released. Posts 2 Posts is expected next year.

Current, 3.7 branch will get 2 or 3 more minor revisions that will add new custom fields, improve meta boxes and add roles based control over custom fields and meta boxes. Also, things will be prepared to get more new features when the development of 4.0 starts in late september. GD Custom Posts and Taxonomies Tools Pro 4.0 released is expected by the end of October 2012. New version will include improvements to the user interface, tabbed meta boxes interface, custom posts statuses editor, custom rewrite rules for third party post types, improved bbPress integration, mass editor for post types and taxonomies and few more things. Roadmap for this version is already updated: plugin development roadmap.

But, I also plan to work on some new things, that at first, I wanted to make into new plugins, but since GD CPT Tools Pro allows use of modules, I decided to make two modules for it. Features are related to post types and some users will find them useful:

• Index: Module will add new taxonomy to index all posts for a post type by the first later in the post name. You will get index pages listing posts by first letter, widget with indexes and few more things.
• Posts To Posts Relationship: For some highly complex data structure and connectivity between posts of different post types, module will implement connectivity between posts.

Modules will not be free, each module will cost $39.00. This will be one time payment only, and to use a module you need valid license for GD CPT Tools Pro. Support for the module will be valid for as long as your license for the plugin is valid. There are some licensing and prices changes coming from September 1 2012 that will prepare everything for modules, and Developer License will include modules for free. More information about these changes are coming soon.

Text field with Regex

Text field now have settings for regular expressions. You can select from predefined expressions or you can create your own expression (it must be JavaScript compatible). These expressions are used to limit the characters entered by the user in this field type.

Date and month fields are expanded with control over the format to save data in the database. And, a long standing visual problem with the upload form is solved with the improvements to term images attaching JavaScript code.

New custom fields examples

New Month field is taken from GD Products Center plugin, and it allows setting only Month and Year. For both month and date custom fields you can set the PHP display format and both are passed through the translation function. As for the text and HTML field you can set the length limit for the field, and on the image on the right you can see the counter for such limited fields, and the new month selection control.

New enhanced feature for post types is added: displaying archive link in the admin side menu for the post type. As for other changes, export is now limited to admins only gdr2 library is updated and meta box display improved a bit. Saving the date is changed also, and now it is saved in universal format that can easily be used for sorting by such field.

Toolbar Menu Integration

To allow for more flexibility in the future, plugin now support modules architecture already in use in GD Products Center and GD Star Rating 2.0. More info on modules will follow, but for now, two internal modules are available. First one is for custom meta box integration into bbPress and second one (new feature) for integration into WordPress toolbar menu. bbPress module is not changed from previous functionality but one bug is fixed.

To set up modules, new Modules panel is available in the plugin menu. If you were using bbPress integration already, please check if your bbPress settings for the module are preserved after upgrade to 3.7.

New custom field is available, allowing you to add Google Maps. This field right now supports search by address and positioning of marker. More things will be added to the field in the future versions.

All widgets are now available through functions and shortcodes (to be added to documentation soon). Few things with the widgets are improved. New gdr2 library is included and jQueryUI updated to latest 1.8.21 version. To handle Google Maps, GMAP3 library is added.

Next major version 4.0 will take some time to develop, and roadmap already has current plans for it, but that is likely to change and expand with more features. More information on this version is expected in the next couple of months. Until than, few minor revisions are expected. To make sure that new version is working OK, you need to regenerate rewrite rules. You can do it from the plugin Tools panel (WordPress rewrite rules Reset), or from WordPress Permalinks panel. Also, some warnings with taxonomies classes were fixed (nothing critical, simply, variables that were not initialized).

To enable this for each post type, there is a enhanced feature to enable for each post type. Shortcodes are now in its own class, allowing easier expanding in future version, with few bugs fixed in current shortcodes implementation. Filters and actions are added to control saving of custom fields (you can also change value before saving). Few more bugs are fixed (some warnings).

Terms Tagger

New version brings integration with OpenCalais API for use with the tagger expansion of the tags/custom taxonomies meta boxes with some other improvements. gdr2 library is updated to latest 2.7.4 and jQueryUI to new 1.8.20.

jQueryUI hasn’t been updated for more than 6 months and new version fixes several display problems with datepicker and popup controls. Also, there was an issues with loading of some of gdr2 classes, and some things were loaded even when they are not needed, causing problems to some of our other plugins. New gdr2 is included and loading issue is gone.

Post Types Panel

Image above shows the new layout for the post type editor panel. And, as you can see, it shows information a bit differently with options grouped logically. Taxonomies and meta boxes are listed now with name and label. Similar thing is done with the taxonomies panel.

Tooltip

To help understanding options, tooltips are added for all the links on the panel, like on the image on the right. From the same image here, panel has a new option for templates in the theme for the post type. For now, this shows what templates are needed for this post type, so you will know what file you need to make and customize.

Another new thing is new custom field type for resolution. When in the meta box, it will show X and Y values to enter. More custom fields are coming in future versions.
